Avenues of Service

The main objective of Rotary is service — in the community and throughout the world. Rotarians build goodwill and peace, provide humanitarian service, and encourage high ethical standards in all vocations. The Rotary motto is "Service Above Self."

The avenues of service represent four areas of opportunities for service. Through Club service Rotarians support the effective operation of the club. Vocational service offers Rotarians opportunities for service within their occupation. Rotarians serve the Community in numerous ways through projects supporting local needs. Finally, through International service Rotarians reach out to assist in addressing global needs.

Although Rotary Club of West Chester develops autonomous service programs, all Rotarians worldwide are united in a campaign for the global eradication of polio. In the 1980s, Rotarians raised $240 million to immunize the children of the world; by 2005, Rotary's centenary year and the target date for the certification of a polio-free world, the PolioPlus program will have contributed $500 million to this cause. In addition, Rotary has provided an army of volunteers to promote and assist at national immunization days in polio-endemic countries around the world.
